Part 1Part 2
Analyse one or more important eventRepresent the turning point for A character (the creature)Quotes:
Meeting the Delacey familyThe Delacey family plays a huge role in the creature’s character development. When the creature flees the first town he discovered due to rejection, he comes across the Delacey family and observes their everyday routine. This family teaches the creature raw human emotions, specifically sympathy. Not long into observing the family, the creature discovers wealth and the constant struggle this poor family has to put up with to survive. (quote 1) Then later on when the creature would steal fireworks and food for his own survival, he realised the effect this had on the family and resorted to nuts and berries. This shows how quickly the creature adapted to other people’s emotions, a trait Victor has yet to discover (quote 2). The Delacey family changed the creature from being a thief to a compassionate being.1: “A considerable period elapsed before I discovered one of the causes of the uneasiness of this amiable family; it was poverty: and they suffered that evil in a very distressing degree”

2: “I had been accustomed, during the night, to steal a part of their store for my own consumption; but when I found that in doing this I inflicted pain on the cottagers, I abstained, and satisfied myself with berries, nuts, and roots, which I gathered from a neighboring wood”
Observing the Delacey family and how they treat each otherDespite the family living in poverty, this doesn’t stop them from being kind to each other (quote 3). This shows that anyone can be kind and show compassion no matter the circumstances. After close observation of the family, he begins to catch onto their language, self leading him into the world as his father figure left him. The Delacey humanity begins to rub off onto the creature as he recognises how kind and thoughtful this gesture is. The creature’s close observation of the family marks the point where the creature craves love. He craves a family, compassion and a companionship. Seeing the Delacey family support and care for each other reminds the creature how lonely he is. This is the first time that the creature realises he can never be part of a tight-knit family, igniting anger and sympathy for himself.  Seeing the family build loving relationships makes him want to fit into society so he can have this too. However, he keeps getting rejected making him feel like an outcast. This is the turning point of him releasing how different he is to everyone else and he is an outcast due to his appearances.3: “In the midst of poverty and want, Felix carried with pleasure to his sister the first little white flower that peeped out from beneath the snowy ground”

4: “Presently I found, by the frequent recurrence of one sound which the stranger repeated after them, that she was endeavouring to learn their language; and the idea instantly occurred to me, that I should make use of the same instructions to the same end”

5: “Nothing could exceed the love and respect which the younger cottagers exhibited towards their venerable companion”
The Delacey family’s reaction to the creatureWhen the creature was observing how they live and their manner, he wanted to join and be one of them. Despite this being the first chance to closely observe human actions, the creature could feel many things but fortunately, him wanting to ‘join them’ is a sign that he has a tendency to gravitate towards kindness. This shows how the creature has humanity despite him not being a human (quote 6).
The creature describes the Delaceys family reaction to the creature’s kind gesture such as restocking wood and other supplies. The family is very grateful for this and assumes that whoever is helping them is good however when they actually face the creature, they find it impossible that someone with that repulsive look could perform such kind actions, this also starts up the creature’s anger as he is constantly facing rejection (quote 7).
6: “What chiefly struck me was the gentle manners of these people; and I longed to join them, but dared not.”

7: “I afterwards found that these labours, performed by an invisible hand, greatly astonished them; and once or twice I heard them, on these occasions, utter the words “good spirit” “wonderful”
Rejection from the Delacey family, the family he had looked up to for two months. When Delacey is home alone, the creature takes his opportunity and goes inside. Prior to this, he learns that Delacey is blind. After building up the courage to speak to him, their so far successful conversation gets interrupted with the rest of the family coming home and disgusted by what is standing in their living room. This encounters anger and hatred for his creator as he once again gets blamed for his appearances. This also shows the theme that there is always someone else to blame as the creature blames his cretor of his loofs and ultismtely blames Frankenstein for making the creature be a “monster”. Due to the Delacey family rejection, the creature kills William (his creator’s younger brother) as revenge for being created. This starts the beginning of the creature’s killing streak as the only family he loved couldn’t love him back due to his appearances.8: “I am blind, and cannot judge of your countenance, but there is something in your words which persuades me that you are sincere,”

tore me from his father who help I needed”
i couldve torn him from limb to limb but I refrained
